Microstructure of Materials

The microstructure of materials is paramount to all the research conducted at our Chair for Materials Science and Engineering. The elements of microstructure (point defects, dislocations, interfaces, particles, etc.) determine the properties of materials. We investigate the formation of microstructures during materials synthesis and processing. It is essential to understand how microstructures govern the functional and structural properties of materials. We explore how the microstructures of engineering materials evolve during thermal and mechanical exposure in the laboratory and during service. Our research aims at identifying elementary processes, which govern material properties on the macroscale. In order to contribute to a better understanding of microstructure/property relations and to contribute to the development of new materials, we perform scale bridging microstructural research.
