Experimental Methods in Materials Science

(apl.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Frenzel)

The lecture introduces students of the new bachelor program Materials Science to experimental key methods that characterize the daily work in this field. It provides a first overview and allows for the appreciation of how materials are produced on the lab scale. Students will learn how to characterize the microstructures (optical and electron microscopy) and how to assess mechanical properties (hardness and tensile testing). In a lab course that is held as a part of the lecture, students can familiarize themselves with common techniques. They acquire basic skills required to work in a materials laboratory. The lecture takes place in the winter semester; time and venue will be announced at the start of the semester.
