Introduction to Engineering Materials

This lecture explains the basics of engineering materials to first-semester students. It introduces the major material classes: metals, glass/ceramics, polymers and composites. Materials cycles are discussed and procedures used in selecting materials are reviewed. After successfully completing the lecture, students can understand the fundamental processes, which govern the evolution of microstructures during solidification and during heat treatments. Since these processes govern the formation of the microstructure, they also define material properties. The students learn how to assess the strength of materials. Elastic and plastic material behaviors are reviewed, and the role of notches and cracks is discussed (fracture mechanics). Emphasis is placed on mechanical material behavior under cyclic loading (fatigue) and at elevated temperatures (creep). Moreover, the corrosion of metallic materials is reviewed and electric and magnetic properties are introduced. The lecture provides a first overview on materials processing, microstructure and properties. It is held in the winter semester on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
