Polymers and shape memory alloys

(Dr. rer. nat. Klaus Neuking, apl. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Frenzel)

This advanced lecture module addresses master students from the ICAMS master course MSS. In the part of the lecture on polymers, the macromolecular architecture of polymers is considered in detail. Important characterization methods such as the transmission optical microscopy and IR spectrometry are introduced. Special mechanical test procedures, including thermomechanical analyzers are discussed and special mechanical properties of polymers are highlighted. Special emphasis is placed on how the unique structural and functional properties of polymers are measured. The viscous flow and damping potential are treated, and the fascinating entropy elasticity receives full attention. The shape memory effect in polymeric materials is also given attention. Fiber-reinforced polymers and polymers for high-temperature applications are also introduced. The second part of the lecture considers shape memory alloys. It starts with the coverage of basic physical and microstructural mechanisms governing the martensitic transformation, a diffusionless transformation between a high-temperature (austenite) and low-temperature phase (martensite). Basic physical, microstructural and mechanical aspects are discussed. Advanced topics from the areas of alloy design, high-temperature shape memory alloys, ferroic cooling and functional fatigue are introduced. Parameters, which govern the widths of thermal and mechanical hysteresis, receive attention. Special emphasis is placed on advanced processing technologies.

The classes are held in the summer semester on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m.
