Materials for Aerospace Applications

(Prof. Dr.-Ing. Marion Bartsch)

The lecture provides an overview of high-performance materials for aerospace applications. They include improved classical materials and material systems. Emphasis is placed on new material developments and visionary concepts. The students learn how light and reliable materials and material systems are designed, which operate under extreme service conditions such as thermal fatigue loading, creep and high-temperature corrosion. From these materials, critical high-temperature components are manufactured that are needed to construct aero-engines and rockets. The materials considered in this lecture are moreover used in thermal protection shields for reentry vehicles and in lightweight structures for airframes of wings and satellites. The students learn how critical components can be designed taking material degradation during service life into account. Key characterization and testing methods are introduced that are used to qualify materials and joints for aerospace applications. Moreover, concepts and methods for service life assessments are presented.

The class is held in the winter semester on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
